JCPenney Honors Freedom with Dr. Opal Lee and the Hope & Wonder Juneteenth Collection

JCPenney announces its second Hope & Wonder Juneteenth collection celebrating and honoring Dr. Opal Lee, the “Grandmother of Juneteenth,” and join her in the march for freedom and unity as a national sponsor of Opal Lee’s Walk for Freedom through its partnership with Unity Unlimited for a third year in a row.

Opal’s Walk for Freedom is an annual event focused on creating awareness around the meaning of Juneteenth, celebrating the end of slavery in 1865 and emphasizing the need to continue fighting for progress.

JCPenney is proud to sponsor the event once again and will join in the walk on Monday, June 19, in Fort Worth, Texas. The Company will also sponsor a “virtual” Opal’s Walk with JCPenney associates in other locations who want to join in with a self-directed 2.5-mile walk of their own. JCPenney also recognizes Juneteenth as a paid company holiday.

In addition to Opal’s Walk for Freedom and The Hope & Wonder Juneteenth Collection, JCPenney is excited to unveil an exclusive interview with Dr. Lee herself discussing her instrumental role in actioning Juneteenth celebrations across Texas and recognition nationwide, hosted by JCPenney Senior Design Director Brandi Wallace. About The Hope & Wonder Juneteenth Collection

Designed by members of JCPenney’s Creative Coalition–an inhouse team of designers who represent the communities being celebrated during Hope & Wonder™ cultural observances–this year’s Juneteenth collection features words like unity, freedom, equality, and community, includes an expanded selection of apparel for children and adults, and features Dr. Opal Lee as a special guest in the campaign photoshoot.

“This collection proudly celebrates the history, heritage and freedom of Black Americans through meaningful graphics and colors,” said Senior Designer Krystal Ellis-Kendrick.
