JCPenney Store in McAllen, Texas, Prepares to Reopen One Year After Hurricane

Last July, Hurricane Hanna – a Category 1 storm that brought strong winds and flooding – ripped through south Texas. Store 0226 at La Plaza Mall in McAllen, Texas, sustained heavy damage, including severe flooding and structural damage, that forced the store to temporarily close its doors.

A little over a year later, the McAllen store has been rebuilt from the ground up and is coming back better than ever next month. A new roof, flooring, fitting rooms, wider aisles, new graphics, and LED lights will make the shopping experience even more convenient and enjoyable for customers when the store reopens.

Reinvesting in the Community

JCPenney has been a staple in the Rio Grande Valley for more than 45 years. Honoring this history and our commitment to the McAllen community, rebuilding and reopening the store will provide countless jobs and economic benefits.

Many store associates were able to come back or seek alternative opportunities at nearby JCPenney locations. To ensure the store is ready to welcome back our loyal South Texas and international customers in September, Store 0266 will hold a hiring event on Aug. 6-7, from 2-6 p.m., in front of the JCPenney mall entrance.

Stay tuned for more details as we prepare to unveil the store to the public on Friday, Sept. 3, with exciting grand reopening events all weekend long.
